Battle of the Books

2 knights and a book

Reading becomes a fun group activity with Battle of the Books.  This quiz-show game is an exciting way for students to practice analyzing and describing characters, settings, and plots with the end game of improving reading comprehension skills. Battle of the Books quiz questions begins with the words "In which book..." so that the answer will always be a title and author. Students get points for the correct title and points for the correct author.

You can find the list of books for each grade level/reading level on the Alaska Battle of the Books website. Team members read these books over a couple of months and receive a prize when they read all the books. Students quiz each other on the contents of books and then compete in teams of not more than three students to correctly answer questions based on the books in a "quiz show" format. Teams (3-12 grade) may participate at the local, district, and state levels of competition. We usually meet at BEST for virtual competitions with other teams.

If you are interested in joining the BEST team for Battle of Books or have questions about the teams, please contact Education Specialist Steve Brown at steve.brown@k12northstar.org.
